Interoperability is Becoming More Tenable in a Healthcare Setting
The idea and desire for interoperability in the healthcare setting is often talked about because of the many benefits it can offer; however, it’s such a complicated process that it almost seems impossible. Electronic health records (EHRs) were a major step toward interoperability, but sharing them in accordance with HIPPA privacy requirements and between different IT systems remained difficult. Now, the Secretary of Health and Human Services (HHS) has a roadmap and the support of the private sector.
As discussed in “HHS ups its efforts to foster interoperability,” posted by Carten Cordell on FederalTimes.com, Sylvia Mathews Burwell, the Secretary of HHS indicated that she had secured commitments from the companies that provide over 90% of EHRs used in the hospital setting to make the data easier to use for patients and providers. The goal is to improve interoperability, which is to securely share patient data in order to enable patients and their provider to access medical records as they move around the healthcare system. The trick is that hospitals choose a variety of IT systems, which makes it hard to share data, not to mention share it securely. The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPPA) regulates to whom patient data can be released and some facilities have chosen “information blocking” to avoid stiff penalties for violating HIPPA rules. Another roadblock is how the shared data can be used. Patient privacy is another challenge in this process, in addition to data security.
Streamline Healthcare Data Management with ERP and CRM
The HHS Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC) has outlined interoperability goals and is developing governance to address these known challenges. Healthcare networks can support these measures by replacing aging legacy systems with more modern business management solutions. A robust enterprise resource planning (ERP) solution and customer relationship management (CRM) solution can streamline the data capture process and make it easier to share it with other providers and patients in a clear, concise way and in compliance with regulatory restrictions.
Capture the data your patients need and share it with greater efficiency by using modern management technology.
