“There’s always something new,” says Peter Austin, Administrator, McHenry County. “And you have to challenge yourself. The residents we serve have a lot more experience with technology now, and there’s an expectation that their government is going to keep pace.”

With a very wide range of services supported by separate departments—from the Sheriff’s Department to the Division of Transportation to a county owned nursing home—the McHenry County government is always dealing with “something new” and determined that their government ERP financial system was not equipped to handle the job.

An outdated government ERP system blocks the path to modernization

Specifically, the current government ERP system was outdated, forcing employees to rely on manual business processes and reporting—often resulting in redundant work and the need for shadow spreadsheets and tracking systems. It was not able to offer newer features like flexibility and accessibility options like mobile access.  In addition, based on the fact that IT organizations today struggle with supporting all the technology demands of customers and constituents, the county wanted a cloud-based ERP. “Everything shows that the industry is going to the Cloud very rapidly,” says Peter Voss, IT Project Manager. “We decided that it was time for McHenry County to do the same thing.”
